Lisane fell asleep soon after her head touched the pillow. Something which came as a surprise when she woke next morning, for somehow she’d expected to lay awake agonising over hanging up on Zac’s call…worse, choosing not to pick up when he rang back.

It was still early. The house was quiet, although she could hear birds twittering in the trees outside her window. Somewhere a door slammed, a car engine fired, and in the distance a dog barked. Soon to be joined by other dogs in tandem.

She resisted the temptation to turn on her cellphone and check for messages, discarding it on a ‘needtoknow’ basis. Later, when she was dressed and had settled her stomach with tea and toast…maybe then.

Sunshine filtered through the curtains, fingering the room with warmth, and minutes later she tossed back the bedcovers and cautiously swung her feet to the floor.

So far, so good. Maybe if she moved slowly the desire to heave would be averted.

Sure! Three steps and she had to break into a run to reach theen suite . Sixtoeight more weeks of this, and she’d be a wreck. The thought she might be in the minority of women who suffered thus through the entire pregnancy brought her out in a sweat!

A shower helped, and she put on jeans and a top, pulled her hair into a loose knot at her nape, then she emerged from her room and made her way to the kitchen.

The aroma of freshly brewed coffee teased her tastebuds and accelerated a craving for her usual morning caffeine fix. Tea just didn’t seem a satisfactory substitute!

Solene was stacking toast onto a plate with one hand while the other dipped a teabag into a cup of hot water. Bacon sizzled in the pan, almost perfectly crisp and ready to serve.

‘Hi.’ Lisane breathed in with appreciation. ‘Smells great.’

Her sister turned and shook her head in dismay. ‘You’re not supposed to be here.’

Lisane arched an eyebrow. ‘Where else should I be?’

‘In your room. I was going to bring you breakfast in bed.’ Solene gestured towards the table. ‘Go sit down.’

Solene in oldersister mode was quite something!

She effected a mock salute. ‘Yes, ma’am.’ And did what she was told.

‘JeanClaude?’

‘He left early to meet Alain. They’re taking the boat out for the day.’

A plate of bacon and eggs was placed in front of Lisane. ‘Eat!’

‘Thanks,’ she said gratefully. ‘My turn to cook tomorrow.’

Solene pulled out a chair opposite, took a sip of ruinously black coffee, then nursed the cup in both hands.

Lisane picked up cutlery and cut into a strip of bacon, added some egg and forked the morsel into her mouth. Ambrosia.

‘Are you OK?’

Now, there was a telling question! She cut straight to the chase. ‘Zac rang. We spoke. I hung up on him.’

Her sister’s eyes sharpened a little. ‘I’m interested in thewe spoke part between “Zac rang” and “I hung up on him”.’

‘Basically the conversation was limited.’On reflection, she hadn’t really given him a chance. But then the jury was out as to whether he deserved it or not.
